Why windows streak in the first place
Streaks are almost always residue, not dirt. The usual culprits: cleaner applied so heavily it dries before it is wiped evenly, towels carrying wax or fabric-softener residue from the laundry, mineral deposits left by hard tap water, and the oily plasticiser film that builds on the inside of windscreens in hot climates — something every Western Sydney summer delivers. Fixing streaks is mostly about removing what causes them.
Work out of direct sun
Hot glass evaporates cleaner before it can be wiped evenly, leaving dried edges and smears no matter how good your technique is. Park in shade and let the glass cool before starting. Early morning is ideal — you get cool panels and full daylight to inspect your work afterwards.
Use dedicated low-lint towels
Keep separate microfibre towels used only for glass, and wash them without fabric softener, which leaves a film that smears instead of cleaning. A towel that has polished wax or picked up dashboard dressing will transfer that residue straight back onto the window. Two or three glass-only towels — one damp for cleaning, one dry for buffing — solve most streak problems on their own.
Clean in two stages
Use one towel to clean and a second dry towel to buff away remaining moisture. Spray onto the towel rather than directly at the glass when working near dashboards and electronics. Work in manageable sections rather than spraying the whole windscreen at once; smaller sections stay wet long enough to be wiped properly.
Change direction inside and outside
Wipe the interior glass in one direction (say, top to bottom) and the exterior in another (side to side). If a streak remains after everything dries, its direction instantly tells you which surface needs another pass. This one habit removes most of the guesswork from glass cleaning.
Remember the edges and mirrors
Lower each side window slightly to clean the top edge — that strip is where grime collects and where most "I cleaned them but they still look dirty" complaints originate. Return the window, then clean the visible area. Finish with the wiper blades themselves: wipe the rubber with a clean towel, since contaminated blades re-smear the windscreen every time they sweep. Mirrors and rear glass respond to the same controlled method.
Mind your water quality
Hard water leaves mineral spots as it dries, which read as streaks from certain angles. If your taps are prone to scale, use distilled or filtered water for a final light mist and buff. It is a small step that noticeably improves the finish on large panels like windscreens.
Deal with interior haze properly
That greasy film inside the windscreen is plasticiser off-gassing from the dashboard, accelerated by heat. It returns over time regardless of how well you clean, so expect to repeat interior passes periodically rather than expecting one clean to last forever. A barely damp towel followed by a dry buff handles it without dripping cleaner onto dash electronics.
