Why beach days are hard on cars
A day on the coast leaves three unwanted souvenirs: sand that works into every seam, salt residue carried on sea breezes, and damp gear that breeds musty smells in a closed cabin. For Western Sydney drivers, that often means an hour-plus drive home with all three settling in. Dealing with them promptly — ideally the same evening — prevents a fun trip from turning into a deep-clean job.
Unload before sand spreads
Remove towels, boogie boards, toys, esky items and shoes before they get moved repeatedly through the cabin. Shake everything out in one spot outdoors rather than letting each item shed a little along the way. Lay damp equipment flat to dry outside overnight; folding wet towels into a bag traps moisture against fabric and is how that distinctive post-beach smell begins.
Vacuum methodically, not frantically
Sand settles into mat fibres, seat rails, carpet edges and the seams of child seats. Remove floor mats first and beat or vacuum them separately. Inside, vacuum slow overlapping passes working from the seats downward — brushing hard simply drives grains deeper into carpet. Pay special attention to the seat rails and door sills, where sand collects unnoticed and grinds into trim every time someone climbs in.
Rinse exterior residue safely
Coastal trips leave salt film and fine grit on paint, glass, wheels and lower panels. The golden rule is to rinse thoroughly before anything touches the paint — a mitt dragged across a gritty surface turns light contamination into swirl marks. Give wheels and lower doors extra attention, as brake dust and salt combine there fastest. A proper pre-rinse followed by a safe hand wash is exactly how our Exterior Detail approaches it.
Check the hidden areas
Open the boot and inspect the floor, side pockets and any spare-wheel compartment that carried wet equipment. Lift removable liners and let them dry fully. Slide front seats back and check the tracks, and empty door pockets where lolly wrappers and sandy crumbs accumulate. Trapped moisture in these spots is the main source of lingering odours days later.
Glass, screens and touchpoints
Salt film leaves windows slightly hazy, and sunscreen finds its way onto switchgear, steering wheels and infotainment screens. Wipe touchscreens with a barely damp microfibre cloth rather than household sprays, and clean interior glass last so displaced dust settles before the final pass.

A light clean within a day or two is far easier than reviving a cabin where sand has compacted and damp smells have taken hold.
