Why bird droppings damage paint

Bird droppings are mildly acidic and often contain gritty seed fragments. Left on a panel — especially on a hot day — they bake hard and begin to etch into the clear coat, leaving a dull outline long after the deposit itself is gone.   • Reposition to a clean section of towel frequently so grit is not rubbed back into the surface.
  • Follow with a second pass using diluted car wash solution if residue remains, then rinse the area.

Avoid household shortcuts

Kitchen scourers, dry paper towels, all-purpose sprays and undiluted household chemicals are not designed for delicate automotive finishes. Paper towel in particular behaves like fine sandpaper against a dry deposit. Use products and cloths intended for vehicle paint, and resist the temptation to chip hardened deposits off with a fingernail or scraper.

Inspect the area afterwards

Once the panel is clean and dry, look at it under daylight at an angle. A faint dull shadow where the deposit sat is etching rather than leftover dirt — no amount of careful washing will remove it, and repeated rubbing will only spread the damage.
